BASF aims to bulk up globally

Article Abstract:

Despite previous indications that it would be focusing on organic growth and small acquisitions, German chemical manufacturer BASF AG has made a hostile takeover bid for the U.S. company Engelhard Corp., which specializes in chemical catalysts. If BASF's bid goes through, the $4.9 billion acquisition would become the biggest German hostile takeover of a U.S. company ever. In its home country, BASF continues negotiations with Degussa AG to purchase its construction chemicals division.
