Article Abstract:
The public sector electronic major, Bharat Eelectronics Ltd (BEL) mainly produces radars, communication transmitters cum receivers and studio equipment. BEL is aiming at manufacturing numerous products for civilian professional electronic sector. Its thrust area will be to provide products and services for telecommunications joint ventures in India. BEL is launching paging services in India through its 49:51 venture with Multitude Electronics of UK. BEL has a tie up with NEC of Japan to jointly develop digital mobile microwave systems. It has a joint venture with GE Medical Systems to manufacture a high end rotating anode medical diagnostic X-ray tube, CT Max. BELs' strength is its research and development base and its weakness is its business practices. BEL's financial performance has been hit by its interest cost component. BEL may not be able to reach its targeted turnover of Rs2,000 crore by 2000 AD and its net profit could be affected by an impending increase in cost of wages. BEL lacks marketing skills and has a huge manpower base. As on May 15, 1998 its scrip was being traded at Rs46. (tsm)

Sri Adhikari Brothers Television Network Ltd produces television entertainment programmes for all the major TV channels like Doordarshan, ZEE TV and Home TV among others. The company currently has media assets, in the form of 1000 hours of entertainment software having an estimated re-run value of Rs30 crore. Its net profit increased by 93.75 percent to Rs4.65 crore in 1997-98 against Rs2.40 crore in 1996-97 while its total income increased by 31.73 percent to Rs26.57 crore from Rs20.17 crore. The company has set up Sirsa Entertainment Software, a joint venture with Sirsa Channel of Sri Lanka. It is also planning to set up Chowdhary and Adhikari TV Network, a joint venture with the Chowdhary group of Nepal. (khr)

As part of restructuring its business, Voltas has identified manufacture of cooling appliances and engineering business as its core operations. It makes air-conditioners, water-coolers, refrigerators, freezers, bottle-coolers, washing machines, forklift trucks, hydraulic truck cranes, electrical switchgear, machine tools, pollution control equipment and systems, textile machinery and equipment and chemicals.
