BJP targets overseas Indians

Article Abstract:

India's Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, made a patriotic plea for successful overseas Indians to invest in the country in light of the US-led sanctions spurred by India's nuclear tests. Sinha's budget proposals cover special bonds and mutual funds, greater access to the stock market and a so-called green card to allow dual citizenship for overseas Indians. According to businesspeople and economists, the outlook was mixed.

Government's fall will delay reforms, restrain growth

Article Abstract:

Indian President K. R. Narayanan's decision to dissolve the lower house of parliament, which sets the stage for elections in early 1998, could further hurt the country's economy. Pertinent economic reforms would not be addressed until after the elections. The country's currency, the rupee, did not fall immune to the financial crisis gripping most Southeast countries and has already lost more than 8% of its value against the US dollar.
