BUDGET IMPACT: AUTOMOBILES

Article Abstract:

The excise duty on 2-wheelers has been reduced to 24 percent from 25 percent in the budget of the Government of India for 1999- 2000. The surcharge of 10 percent on customs duty is not likely to affect the profit of the 2-wheeler companies as the import content in 2-wheelers is very less. The excise duty on tractors of 1800 cc and more has been increased from 13 percent to 16 percent. The excise duty on tractors below 1800 cc is the same - 8 percent. The demand for tractors of less than 1800 cc capacity is likely to increase because of the price difference. The increase in the excise duty on commercial vehicles from 15 percent to 16 percent and the hike in the price of diesel are likely to hit the industry. The Modvat benefit has been restored which is likely to benefit the automobiles industry. (rk) (kvr)
