BULK DRUG INDUSTRY IN ANDHRA PRADESH

Article Abstract:

Among all the states in the country, Andhra Pradesh holds a prime place in the bulk drug industry. This is attributed to the public sector undertaking IDPL. More than 1/3 of the new bulk drug units coming up in the country is being located in Andhra Pradesh (AP). It has around 600 formulation units. The incentives given by the State Government in the form of subsidy, rebate on energy supplies, allotment of developed land at a concessional rate, deferment of sales tax payments and provision of infrastructure facilities have contributed much to the industry's growth in the State. AP's exports have grown from Rs200 crore in 1992-93 to Rs550 crore in 1997-98. AP has a committed approach towards environment protection measures. The units in AP have adopted the required precautions to deal with emissions and effluent treatments. (um)(psr)

DRUG-MAKERS SEEK REMOVAL OF PRICE CONTROL ORDER

Article Abstract:

The Bulk Drug Manufacturers Association (BDMA) has sought the scrapping of the Drug Price Control Order (DPCO). It feels that the DPCO was unnecessary, as many bulk drugs were trading at prices lower than those specified by the DPCO. While Ibuprofen costs Rs430 a kg (Rs442 a kg suggested by the DPCO), Trimethprim IP costs Rs790 a kg (Rs1,172 a kg). The BDMA also feels that as bulk drugs are not directly consumed by the patients, there was no need to control the prices of these drugs. It has made an application to the Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals of the Government of India for the rescinding of the DPCO. (ag)
