Baan hopes to cut costs in pact with Microsoft

Article Abstract:

Baan NV, a software development company headquartered in Barneveld, Netherlands, has signed a marketing agreement with Microsoft Corp., a developer of computer software. Under the terms of the transaction, Baan will offer Microsoft software as well as support services as part of its factory automation software package. The software firm has also expressed plans to reduce the prices of its products, designed to aid in the automation of a manufacturer's nuts and bolts. The marketing agreement will also enable Baan to induce customers to purchase licenses for each of its desktop, a marked departure from its previous strategy of selling licenses for a definite number of users.

ASML expects weaker results for '98 on tough chip market, Asian crisis

Article Abstract:

ASM Lithography NV, a semiconductor equipment manufacturer based in the Netherlands, predicted that it will post less than its 1997 net income of 329 million guilders, or $178.2 million, in 1998. The company has been affected by the financial crisis in Asia and a duller performance in the chip market. The steady imbalance between supply and demand is creating setbacks for equipment manufacturers although certain buyers of production equipment and chip manufacturers are exhibiting positive activity. Certain analysts are also optimistic that the chip market's downturn will soon bottom out.

ASM Lithography warns that '98 profit will drop

Article Abstract:

ASM Lithography NV (ASML) has forewarned the industry that its 1998 profits will decrease due to slump in the semiconductor market, along with the overcapacity of memory chips. ASML, which manufactures equipment needed for the production of semiconductors, reproached its low earnings forecast on the recent curtailment in capital expenditure by its customers in Taiwan. After hearing ASML's gloomy 1998 forecast, industry experts immediately reduced their profit predictions by up to 35% for 1998 and 1999.
