Consolidation: the well trod path

Article Abstract:

European financial institutions are facing significant challenges as they balance domestic restrictions on their growth against the need to boost their market share. In Portugal, Banco Commercial Portuguese has purchased the private family-owned bank Banco Mello and its insurance subsidiary Imperios Seguros. Spain's Banco Santander Central Hispano has continued its cross-border growth with the purchase of Meridional group of Brazil, while in Italy Banco Popolare di Verona is to merge with Banco Popolare di Bergamo. Also in Italy, Unicredito's planned alliance with BBVA will be resolved in Feb 2000.

Article Abstract:

Few investment bankers are prepared to predict when, and if, Europe's cross-border retail banking mergers will take place because of the political resistance to takeovers which involve surrendering control of a major national institution. Currently, banks are scrambling for national supremacy in preparation for full-blown cross-border consolidation.
