Barclays seeks a majority stake in ABSA Group of South Africa

Britain's Barclays PLC is negotiating the possible acquisition of South Africa's largest retail bank, Absa Group Ltd. The acquisition would mark Barclay's return to retail banking in South Africa after a period of 18 years during which it has focused primarily on its investment banking operations in that country.

Bidding battle for Alliance Boots heats up

UK pharmacy firm Alliance Boots PLC has attracted rival bids from two private equity groups, Terra Firma Investments Ltd. and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and Co. Terra Firma sweetened its offer to 1,126 pence per share after Alliance Boots agreed to Kohlberg Kravis' bid of $21.22 bil.
