Bass PLC announced that its pretax profit increased 4.8% in this fiscal year. World's second-largest hotel owner and Britain's second-largest brewer, whose profits rose to 4.7 billion pound sterling, will need to invest large sums of money to upkeep and renovate its properties in the future, however.

Scottish & Newcastle recovers to record a pretax profit

Scottish and Newcastle PLC posted a 184.5 million pounds (295 million euros) pretax profit for the 2001 first-half. The company, the largest brewer in the United Kingdom, posted a 95.6 million pounds loss during the same 2000 period.

Bass posts 4% increase in net profit
