Battered but not beaten

Article Abstract:

The South Korean military's tradition of using corporal punishment to instill discipline among its members has come under attack from younger military conscripts. Incidents of violent beatings which have resulted in serious injuries or death, although commonplace, are being questioned in the closely-knit military system. A constant justification for violence within the military is the threat of a communist takeover by North Korea.

Where only records crash: foreign cash drives regional stocks higher

Article Abstract:

Going head to head

Article Abstract:

The government's liberalization of live deer imports has drawn angry reactions from South Korea's 7,672 deer farmers. The farmers feel that they would eventually be edged out of the lucrative deer velvet business by corporate-owned deer farms. Deer velvet, or blood drained from the antlers of young deer and drank as a blood tonic, fetches high prices in the country's more expensive drinking places.
