Bayer to pay $2.96 billion to buy Roche's consumer-health unit

Article Abstract:

The sale of Roche Holding AG's consumer-health unit to Bayer AG will boost Bayer's existing non-prescription drug portfolio to create a combined product that will represent one of the top three non-prescription drug business in the world. In a separate deal, Roche is selling GlaxoSmithKline PLC the rights to market the prescription-free version of its obesity drug Xenical.

Novartis launches buyback of shares

Despite a planned share buy-back program valued at approximately three billion Swiss franc s, pharmaceutical company Novartis AG says it will continue to monitor the market for possible takeover opportunities. Companies in which Novartis has recently shown interest include Aventis SA and Roche Holding AG.

Bayer wins control of Schering

Bayer AG of Germany has succeeded in its merger with Schering AG also of Germany. The pharmaceutical giant is to acquire the 21.8 percent stake Merck KGaA of Germany has in Schering AG. Merck KGaA was a rival bidder for Schering AG.
