Before the flood

Article Abstract:

A study made under the UN Environment Programme forecasts potential damages and benefits for Southeast Asia of global warming in the next few decades. Amount of rainfall will vary according to region, but the uniform effect will be a rise in the sea level by one meter. Industries that will lose much from flooding are fish and shrimp, while crops planted along coastal areas will be lost. High temperatures, increased rainfall and lower solar radiation will adversely affect inland crops, such as rubber. Increased rainfall will aid irrigation but aggravate erosion, soil leaching and siltation of dams.

From print to screen

Article Abstract:

Nation Publishing Group of Thailand hopes that its prominence in resisting the military's repression of the pro-democracy movement in May 1992 will help it get a television-broadcasting license from the new government. However, Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai's government has not acted on the Nation's request since coming to power in Sep 1992. Thai television provides 49% of spending on ads while newspapers provide 26%, which gives little economic justification for granting the request. The Nation's circulation and revenue have risen steadily due to aggressive reporting and marketing.

Test of Thai resolve

Article Abstract:

The Bank of Thailand may have to bail out First City Investments (FCI)since three-quarters of its $342 million assets were found to be bad or doubtful loans. However, observers believe that the Bank of Thailand should just allow FCI to declare bankruptcy and let creditors and depositors file claims the group owners since the bank's depositors are not the vulnerable masses anyway and collateral damage would be minimal.
