Beijing dance troupe tempers shock of the new

Article Abstract:

The Beijing Modern Dance Ensemble is the first dance company to feature modern dance in China. Most of the other dance troupes focus on traditional Chinese dances. The ensemble held its first successful performance entitled 'Red and Black' at the Poly Plaza Theater in Beijing, China. During its inception, ensemble director Jin Xing found it difficult to develop support for her unconventional dance performances. Through careful public relations, however, the dance troupe has established a significant following among Chinese dance aficionados.

New wave in Chinese opera resounds with innovation traced back to ancient arts and customs

Article Abstract:

Audience warmly received the innovative new Chinese opera production of the epic Ming dynasty open, "The Peony Pavilion," performed by the Shanghai Kunju Opera Company and directed by Chen Shizheng. Chen's forward-going approach and the media interest earned by the new production has led to an ongoing discussion on how to renew Chinese opera while holding onto its ancient traditions.

Western fantasy of old Beijing travels well

Article Abstract:

Beijing, China's Century Theater recently staged an elaborate production of Giacomo Puccini's opera 'Turandot.' Originally set in ancient Beijing, the opera was set in another fictional place by director Xu Xiaozhong, who believed that Chinese audiences would not find the idea of a mythical Beijing credible.
