Article Abstract:

Argentina is seeking to reform its labor market under Fernando de La Rua, new president from the Radical party. Changes planned include reform of collective bargaining and greater flexibility on employment rights. Payroll taxes are also being lowered for employers taking on new workers. There is hope that these measures will help to reduce unemployment, which has reached 13.8%. High payroll taxes and rigid labor laws mean that flexible contracts are common. There is still a need for reform of labor unions.

Everyone cross

Article Abstract:

France has reduced the working week to 35 hours from 39 hours, and truck drivers calculate that they need an 11% pay rise to make up for the shortfall. It is unclear that the move will mean more jobs are created, as the government had hoped, and most companies are waiting for a year before implementing the measure. Workers may be put off by voting for the government as a result of this measure, which may not lead to a drop in unemployment.
