The plans to move Germany's capital to Berlin are failing due to financial as well as political considerations. Despite the hesitation of the Social Democrats to make the move, bids to remodel the Reichstag, the former parliament in 1933, already have been solicited.

Deputy leader Wolfgang Thierse of the Social Democrats could provide leadership as a mayor that would re-establish Berlin as a political center for Germany. Manfred Stolpe is another possible candidate who could place the Social Democrats in power.
