Berth planning and resources optimisation at a container terminal via discrete event simulation

Article Abstract:

It has been possible to develop a queuing network model of the logistic activities connected with the arrival, berthing and departure of ships at a container terminal. The simulation tool was found to be effective in estimating how improving the resource capacity and altering resource allocation policies influence the performance levels available to shipping firms.

Dispatching of small containers via coastal freight liners: the case of the Aegean Sea

Article Abstract:

An effort to reengineer coastal freight shipping in the Aegean Sea in Greece is presented with the introduction a new technology of small containers to solve the infrastructural problems of island ports. Analyzing the problem after introducing a vehicle routing problem (VRP) formulation reveals that passenger traffic demands are not optimal and at least 5.1percent cost savings may be realized by redesigning island links and that total cost decreases with increase in vessel capacity.
