Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif's tenure appeared in jeopardy as he had to blockade the capital against a 'long march' of demonstrators, led by former prime minister Benazir Bhutto. Prospects for a change in government, helped along by the military, are examined.

A movement to make Islamic law the supreme law of the land in Pakistan is gaining momentum, even though former prime minister Benazir Bhutto has attracted a lot of support speaking against it. Islamic law supporters are attempting to amend Pakistan's constitution.

Turbulent Pakistan: it will stay that way until politicians and citizens alike see the merits of the rule of law

Article Abstract:

Pakistan needs more democracy, and Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto should not be tempted to create a more authoritarian regime. Violence in Pakistan has increased, and the government must rein in the police and reform its religious laws.
