Billiton-BHP deal may spur mergers in mining industry

United Kingdom's mining giant Billiton PLC and Australia's BHP Ltd., have signed merger agreement. When completed the newly merged company will be worth $28 billion with headquarters in Melbourne, Australia. The merger of BHP Ltd., and Billiton PLC could be a trend for mining companies.

BHP beats expectations with 1st-quarter profit

Broken Hill Proprietary Co. posted a higher-than-expected increase of 33% in its net profits for the 1999 fiscal first-quarter. The company posted A$466 million (288.9 million euros) in net profits for the period ending August 1, 1999.
