Article Abstract:

British prime minister, Tony Blair, has sought to improve relations between Britain and the European Union (EU), but there are still a number of disputes with Europe on issues such as tax policy and beef. There has also been a rise in attitudes hostile to closer relations with Europe in public opinion polls in Britain. Blair hopes to tackle the problem through economic reform in the EU. Greater flexibility would allow the different members of the EU to pursue integration at their own pace, and would be a more fruitful policy for Blair to pursue.

Article Abstract:

British prime minister, Tony Blair, aims to campaign for economic reform in the European Union (EU), and argues that welfare and labor market reforms should move toward the US model. There is little enthusiasm for Britain joining European monetary union, and Blair has been reluctant to press for membership. He argues that cooperation on foreign policy and defense is to the benefit of the individual governments concerned. He probably hopes that tax disputes will not color views of Europe prior to British elections.
