Blood and money

Article Abstract:

The civil war between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tigers seems to be boosting the country's economy. The civil war naturally brings additional costs for the government, but some of these costs are met by a special defence levy. Most of the new recruits to the armed forces have come from the poorer parts of southern Sri Lanka, and their pay now helps to support their families. The conflict has created other sources of employment, and the country is also benefiting from remittances sent to the country by those who have fled.
