Bombs in Belgrade, bricks in Beijing

Article Abstract:

Anti-US feeling has been expressed in China following the bombing of the Chinese embassy in Yugoslavia by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The Chinese leadership has portrayed this an deliberate, rather than as an accident, and has been able to mobilize public opinion against the US. China may seek concessions from the US on trade and defense issues, such as membership of the World Trade organization with few significant concessions. There are divisions within the Chinese leadership which may become apparent as a result of the eventual response of the government.
