Borders' Bookstore thrives in Singapore; U.K. is next

Article Abstract:

Borders Group Inc., a bookstore chain, is a big success in Singapore, which is considered a test site for its international expansion. The 31,000-sq-ft Borders bookstore in Singapore, its first outside the US, opened in Oct. 1997 with a lifestyle concept and format that is new to the local market. Aside from its 150,000 titles, the bookstore allows customers to browse over new issues of international magazines. Borders features cushioned benches for browsing customers, a cafe, a music section and holds occasional readings by authors. Borders plans to put up similar super bookstores in London and Brighton, in the United Kingdom; in Melbourne, Australia; and in Glaslow, Scotland, before the end of 1998.
