Eye opener: magazine editor tests the limits of press freedom

Article Abstract:

P. Ramakrishnan, or 'Rama,' edits the controversial and outspoken English-language Malaysian magazine 'Aliran Monthly.' The journal, put out by the social reform group Aliran Kesedaran Negara, acts as a sort of public conscience in a country where the government often censors or closes down critical publications. A former teacher of the blind and union leader, Rama has not sought a high profile and is much less well known than his magazine.
