Breakbulk cargo on the upswing

Article Abstract:

Corporate shippers of breakbulk cargo will likely confront higher shipping costs and fewer carrier spaces in 2000. Breakbulk cargo refers to goods which are not containerized and are often shipped on deck rather than in a hold of a cargo vessel. Furthermore, the increasing demand for breakbulk shipping has heightened the importance of intermodal issues at the destination end. However, some new ocean going vessels are coming into service, and strong infrastructure has been installed around ports that regularly handle breakbulk cargo. These factors could reduce breakbulk shipping prices and ease some handling concerns.
