Breaking down the barriers to adequate social housing

Article Abstract:

The UK social housing sector is hampered by a lack of confidence in new ideas and techniques, according to delegates at the Apr 1997 Joseph Rowntree Foundation's (JRF) 'Rethinking Housebuilding' conference. The conference heard how the housing sector has failed to adapt and innovate, and new housing estates are still trying to combine craft techniques and mass production. Urgent action is needed to make housing cheaper, more energy-efficient, higher quality and easier to maintain. According to the JRF, the UK's housing stock is the oldest in Europe.

Are you getting enough?: A new report, 'Architects Fees 98' by Mirza & Nacey Research, gives you the opportunity to compare your fees to your competitors

Article Abstract:

The question of architect's fees has become difficult since the mandatory fee scales were abolished, as architects want to earn sufficient fees to run their businesses effectively, whilst not seeking unfeasibly large fees in relation to competitors. A report by Mirza & Nacey Research 'Architects Fees 98' provides details of fees charged by architects on 2,500 jobs over the course of a year, incorporating 35 different building sectors. Overall, fees are less that indicative levels recommended by RIBA, and there is also a strong regional factor.
