Breaking silence: Beijing permits screening of Nanjing massacre film

Article Abstract:

Beijing officials have allowed filmmaker Wu Ziniu to release his movie 'Rape of Nanjing,' the mainland's first film portrayal of the 1937-38 massacre by Japanese troops. Chinese authorities remain firmly in control of discussion, however, and refuse to allow any Chinese to petition Japan for redress. Events surrounding the attack remain unclear, largely because Beijing still refuses to release many records. However, the Japanese imperial army savagely raped thousands of women and killed up to 200,000 people.

True grit: you won't see China's Sixth Generation of film directors at Cannes

Article Abstract:

Controversial Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yuan's work typifies that of the so- called Sixth Generation, cinematographers whose work completely eschews the mainstream studios. He and his colleagues started their careers around the time that the government crushed Tianenman Square uprising, and since then the major studios have stagnated. Critics say the younger group has little talent but considerable entrepreneurial flair, while China's press questions their methods and their acceptance of being banned.
