British Gas has held a virtual monopoly on the gas business in Britain, even after its privatization in 1986. Regulators have gotten the company to agree to give up half of its contract market by 1995 to new competitors. This could reduce the cost of gas to the consumer.

London's regulatory mess

Prudential regulation

The Prudential Corporation PLC stated that Britain should drop its experiment with investment business self-regulation in favor of a statutory system with a strong enforcement body similar to the American Securities and Exchange Commission.
