Building societies: some suggestions for reform

Article Abstract:

Larger building societies prefer the implementation of one supervisory body for banks and building societies. This body also supervises both organizations in terms of capital, hedging and investor protection. However, smaller societies chose the status quo in terms of capital, liquidity, risk management, reporting and investor protection. Proposed changes for the societies include a single supervisory body for banks and building societies, reform on the capital adequacy rules, a minimum cash requirement and an increase of the wholesale limit to 50%.
