Building society management expense functions: 1984-1989

Article Abstract:

A study of the operating costs of building societies from 1984 to 1989 is discussed. The study estimates the management expense functions of building societies for six years. The results of the study show increases in economies of scale up to a certain size for each of the six years covered by the study. However, the minimum efficient asset size (MEAS) showed a decline from 1984 until 1987. The costs incurred by large societies in developing new financial services and the moderate increase in the budgets of the smaller societies are the reasons for the decline in the MEAS.
