Burke's heir: Patten cast from traditional English political mould

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong's Governor Christopher Patten enjoys more popularity among the people of Hong Kong than any other governor in recent history. The 48-year-old Conservative Party member has succeeded in projecting an image of a tough, energetic, plain-speaking individual who enjoys interacting with common people as well as intellectuals. He has shown willingness to confront the Chinese leadership about the rights of Hong Kong's citizens. Patten's popularity has been enhanced by his decision to ignore the traditional trappings of his position.

The return of the Pekingese

Article Abstract:

Owning dogs as pets rather than for food is once again becoming popular in China. The flourishing state of Peking's Shuizhuizi animal market testifies to this popularity. About 100 million dogs currently exist in China. This is a startling change from the Cultural Revolution when dogs were officially proscribed as trappings of the bourgeoisie. A favorite breed is the diminutive Pekingese, a toy dog formerly given an exalted status in imperial China. Economic troubles in Russia have made that country a source of valuable purebreds.

Learning the soft way

Article Abstract:

Asian countries such as Hong Kong, China and Taiwan continue to be the leading manufacturers of quality fakes in the world. US demands for the strict enforcement of laws on the protection of intellectual property rights are forcing these countries to adopt stricter measures against individuals or companies engaged in the infringement of intellectual property rights. China, for one, is vigorously pursuing a campaign against pirates of intellectual property.
