The UK's Labour Party under reformist leader John Smith is taking gradual steps toward centrism, just as Bill Clinton did with the US Democratic Party. Traditional leftists in Labour, led by John Prescott, hope to forestall Smith's effort to moderate the party's stances.

Labour leader John Smith is certain to face opposition at the Brighton conference in Sep 1993. His plan to take away several of the union privileges in selecting Labor candidates for Parliament passed, but he had to make concessions. He may face defeat.
