Business-class socialist

Article Abstract:

British Airways' chairman Robert Ayling is in the process of instituting a controversial cost-reduction program for the profitable airline. Almost immediately upon becoming CEO in Jan 1996, Ayling began his cost-cutting measures, intended to decrease expenses and improve productivity. Cabin crews went on a three-day strike in Jul 1997 when Ayling raised basic pay but eliminated overtime and other allowances. Other plans include outsourcing the airline's maintenance and catering service to concentrate on operations. Ayling plans to cut 1 bil pounds sterling off the airline's annual operating costs between 1997 and 2000.
