Business differences

Article Abstract:

Royal Insurance and Pearl Assurance have new office buildings on adjacent sites in Peterborough, England. The Pearl Centre is designed by Chapman Taylor Partners and has a traditional feel with pitched pantile roof. The Royal Insurance building is by Arup Associates and has a severe appearance with a long, curving glass wall. Although very different in looks, both buildings are judged successful. They share several negative features in offering office planning from the 1970s, failing to involve their workers in design, expecting workers to depend on cars and being isolated from the community.

Mellow drama

Article Abstract:

The 'Galeri' (Cwmni Tref Caernarfon development trust) is designed by Richard Murphy and it stands out as a bold new cultural building for a town with a size that can accommodate Caernarfon's population around 60,000. The Galeri is a testament to how visionary clients and simple but spatially rich architecture can be constructed under challenging circumstances to make for a culturally and commercially more civilized world.

Merging new into old

Article Abstract:

Architect Ahrends Burton and Koralek faced a number of unique challenges when designing Techniquest's science discovery centre in the Cardiff Bay Development Corporation area. The completed building gives space which is extremely accessible, and also incorporates the restored ironwork frame of a Victorian engineering works on the site. Techniquest is already considering a further phase over the dock basin.
