Article Abstract:

PlanEcon's Jan Vanous has authored a study on the valuation of East European currencies since the breakup of the Soviet bloc. Vanous believes that the currencies have fallen so far since 1989 that they are now undervalued, according to an analysis of purchasing-power parities (PPP).

Crossing the East-West chasm

Article Abstract:

Eastern Europe has come a long way in its emergence from authoritarian communism into democratic capitalism, but it may take a lot longer than expected for it to be on a par with the West. There could be political reversals there if the people lose patience with the pace of reform.

Eastern Europe's transition from communism to free market capitalism is proving to be rougher than most expected. The sorry state of the centrally planned economies there now appear to have been underestimated. Reforms now underway should work if given enough time.
