Article Abstract:

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji is finding it difficult to get his ambitious housing reforms into operation. The reforms aim to cut back on state-subsidized housing, which has been common throughout China for decades, and shift the burden of home ownership to the individual. However, private housing development is occurring only slowly and people are proving reluctant to invest their capital in a market which they perceive to be unreliable. Stories of shoddily-built accommodation from individuals who have been attracted to home ownership are also not helping the situation.

Article Abstract:

Most Asian currencies may be in difficulties but China's economy is still strong and China is expected to do all it can to support its currency. China's trade surplus was $18.5 billion from Jan to May 1998 and some economists believe devaluation of the renminbi is unlikely. Others think that the economic crisis could affect it by the end of 1998, especially if cheaper Japanese exports compete with China's exports. China and Japan do not share the same markets so this is unlikely to be a serious threat.
