Buyers' market

Article Abstract:

The Asian economic crisis has led to a considerable number of Asian-controlled banks in the US being sold to US purchasers. US banks are willing to pay high prices for Asian-owned banks, many of which have a strong client base of Asian-Americans and Asians with business interests in the US. It is also expected that many Asian-US-owned banks will seek stock market listings. Asian-controlled banks are also attracting interest from Taiwanese purchasers. Under new ownership, these banks are likely to pursue strategies involving expansion in the US.

The exiled resurgent

Article Abstract:

Ethnic Chinese are beginning to take a leading role in political and economic life in Cambodia, having previously been repressed and even persecuted. Cambodia's ethnic Chinese are being particularly influential in attracting foreign investment to the country from Chinese businesses in other Southeast Asian countries. However, some observers are rather cautious about the position of ethnic Chinese in Cambodia. In particular, they are concerned about possible links between ethnic Chinese and trade in illegal drugs.
