Buyer's paradise: Lippo Land brings suburbia to Jakarta

The Lippo Group's Supermall in W Jakarta will face fierce competition, with 31 more malls planned for the city by 1997, but it will have Lippo's own $1 billion satellite city as a consumer base. Jakarta now has 976,000 sq m of mall space, with 316,000 more opening in 1995, and the Supermal alone will have 90,000. It claims to have tenants for 80% of that space and hopes to get international giants Metro and JC Penney as anchor stores. It has also taken on all the services for its new community.
