Cadila Healthcare Ltd plans to launch the Indian version of Viagra by mid-1999. It has synthesised sildenafil citrate, the chemical compound used in Viagra. It has sought permission from the Drug Controller of India for clinical trials of the drug, named Penigra. A single capsule of Penigra is likely to cost Rs85. As the patents for pharmaceutical products comes into effect in 2005 AD, the compound can be manufactured and marketed in India. The compound is manufactured by 3 other pharmaceutical companies in India. (rk)

CADILA PROMOTERS MAKE OPEN OFFER FOR 47% OF CASIL HEALTH

Cadila Pharmaceuticals (CP) has made an open offer for buying out 47.48 percent stake in Casil Health Products Ltd (CHPL). The fully paid-up shares will be purchased at a price of Rs5.75 per share and partly paid-up shares at Rs0.75 per share. The shares were quoted at Rs5.40 on the Bombay Stock Exchange on May 27, 1998. CHPL makes disposable syringes, needles, gloves and sulfolane. The equity share capital of the company is Rs3.49 crore. CHPL had accumulated losses of Rs5.56 crore as on December 31, 1997. (gs)

Zydus Cadila has launched Meloxicam for the first time in the country under the brand name of Mel-OD. The drug is used to treat degenerative diseases like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Meloxicam is the first of the COX-2 inhibitors to be introduced the world over. (khr)
