CAP reforms: the Rural Development Policy (RDP)

Article Abstract:

The European Union (EU) introduced the Rural Development Policy (RDP) as part of changes made to the Common Agricultural Policy in Jan 2000. The UK put forward its plans for England under the RDP in Dec 1999. The UK has not always been very interested in similar schemes and often seems unwilling tomatch money given by the EU. Under the RDP the UK government plans to spend 1.6 million pounds sterling during 2000-2006. British farmers are in great need of investment and they are very upset some of their subsidies from the EU will be used for rural development schemes.

The agreement on Agenda 2000 reforms

Article Abstract:

The European Commission of the European Union (EU) aims to carry out a number of reforms which have been set out in a document entitled 'Agenda 2000: For a Stronger and Wider Europe'. These reforms affect the EU's finances, the Cohesion Fund and Structural Fund, and agricultural policy. The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reforms are needed if the EU is to allow new members to join, such as Poland and Hungary, and CAP reforms will be useful in trade talks at the World Trade Organization.
