COMPENSATION FOR POLLUTION MAY LEAVE GOVT, COS POORER

Article Abstract:

The recent order of the Supreme Court (SC) will support people seeking compensation for land and water contaminated by industrial waste. The move may make the industry and the Government to bear expenses of several hundred crore rupees for pay compensation to the aggrieved persons. SC has ordered the Medak district judge to prepare guidelines for the industries to pay compensation to farmers for damaging their lands through the improper disposal of waste. The order will benefit about 1,100 farmers in the Pattancheru, Bollaram and Nakra Vagu basin. They get a total compensation of Rs32.38 crore for the damage caused to their crops and land through industrial waste. (gs)

PIAGGIO DENIED AUDIT OF LML BOOKS, PLANS TO MOVE COURT

Article Abstract:

The board of LML Ltd has rejected the plea of Piaggio of Italy for auditing the accounts of the company. Piaggio is one of the promoters of LML Ltd. Piaggio has stated that its request for auditing the accounts had been accepted by the same board on July 31, 1998. It has stated that the board has breached all the 3 rights of Piaggio by refusing it the right to audit. It now plans to launch legal proceedings against LML Ltd. LML Ltd has contended that the decision to refuse Piaggio's request was taken by a committee of non-promoter directors that had been set up to handle all matters regarding the disputes among the promoters. LML DRAGS PIAGGIO TO ICC, FILES FOR $71-MILLION CLAIM

Article Abstract:

LML Ltd has approached the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris and filed a claim for $71 million against Piaggio. The company has claimed that Piaggio has made vague and baseless allegations against it to cover up its own defaults. The promoters of LML Ltd, the Singhanias, have exercised the option to buyout the 23 percent stake of Piaggio in the scooter manufacturing joint venture. They have also filed a case against Piaggio in the Kanpur Court. (khr)
