Cabinet holds familiar faces: specter of corruption looms as large as ever

Article Abstract:

The inclusion of controversial politicians in the cabinet of Thailand's new government has once again drawn attention to the country's chronic corruption problem. Four of the new cabinet members were part of the overthrown administration of Prime Minister Chatichai Choonhavan, who were all investigated for being 'unusually rich.' Choonhavan himself was appointed adviser to the government of new Prime Minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh. Despite allegations of massive corruption, these politicians were never convicted.

Despite critics in the military, Bangkok is safe

Article Abstract:

Observers were surprised by an army radio program that criticized the government of Thailand Prime Min. Banharn Silpa-archa for failing to control inflationary growth. The program's call for a leadership that would institute changes was expectedly condoned by the Campaign for Popular Democracy, which said that it raised false hopes over military capacity for solving the country's problems.
