California Dharma

Article Abstract:

The Odiyan Buddhist temple complex in California is the biggest Buddhist shrine to be built in the western world. It has been set up by disciples of Tarthang Tulku, a holy man from Tibet. The center was opened to outsiders in late Jun and Jul 1996 and attracted around 7,000 visitors paying $25 each. The center aims to preserve Tibetan Buddhism as well as symbolize the establishment of Buddhism in the western world. Some Buddhists argue that the secrecy and large amounts of money involved in this center are not necessary.

In front of the eight ball; Filipino pool shark Efren Reyes sinks his competitors

Article Abstract:

Filipino pool player Efren 'Bata' Reyes has risen to the profession's pinnacle and, in the process, put his homeland on the billiards map. Some of his competitors say he is the best player alive, perhaps the best ever, with a level of skill to which five titles in 1995 and a #1 worldwide ranking attest. He is also the most accomplished competing Filipino athlete, winning recognition from President Fidel Ramos and others. At 41, he heads a five- man Filipino team that is bringing a novel cultural identity to the table.

Wonder boy

Article Abstract:

Former Japanese star Hideo Nomo brings both exceptional pitching talent and a modest attitude to American baseball at a time when the sport badly needs him. As a lead pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers, he has compiled impressive rookie statistics: his 1.86 earned runs per game and 161 strikeouts lead the league, and his won-loss record is 9-2. More important than these or his unique wind-up is his quiet demeanor, striking in a year when fans are sick of the antics and whining of players and owners alike.
