Call of the mild

Article Abstract:

The Japanese are increasingly taking to camping. The number of Japanese campers has increased from 4 million in 1990 to 8 million in 1997 and the market for camping equipment is worth $1.5 billion. The reason for the boom is difficult to isolate. Some say it stems from an increasing awareness of the environment, and the attraction of the countryside must be important for the Japanese living in crowded cities. However, the Japanese do not stray far from the noisy, crowded campsites, nearby hiking trails are almost deserted and campers cause pollution around some campsites.

Soul searching

Article Abstract:

The arrest of Shoko Asahara, leader of Aum Shinrikyo, for alleged involvement in the subway gas attacks reveals an underside to Japanese society that most Japanese believed did not exist. The cult is populated by educated, upper class young people who are attempting to rebel against strict societal expectations that require lifetime employment and therefore pressure to choose the right education and job. The cult may have been planning a coup based on information obtained by the Japanese police and the presence of assault rifled parts and a Russian helicopter.

Searching for new paths: a series of drastic shocks brings on a questioning mood

Article Abstract:

A series of shocks this year have shaken Japan's self-confidence and shattered its characteristic sense of purpose and fait in the govt. First came the Great Hanshin earthquake in Kobe on Jan 17, destroying important infrastructure, damaging the reputation of the country's construction engineers, and creating widespread insecurity. Then the sarin gas attack on Tokyo's subways further highlighted govt slowness and pointed out new fault lines in society. Finally came financial turmoil and the soaring yen.
