Noriega's trial for cocaine smuggling in Miami is far from the sure thing prosecutors had led Americans to believe. The evidence against Noriega is largely hearsay. An acquittal would be very embarrassing to the Bush Administration, which ordered the invasion that captured him.

Corruption in the Turkish government, which many in the country have suspected for some time, seems to have been confirmed by an automobile crash. The auto carried a police chief, a right-wing member of the mafia, a beauty queen, and a Kurdish militia baron.
