Canal Plus unit wins TV rights to Italy soccer

Article Abstract:

Canal Plus SA's subsidiary in Italy has been awarded the exclusive broadcast rights to the games of four Italian soccer clubs. The rights will be Canal Plus' through 2005. The transaction could discourage competitors from beginning a rival multichannel platform in Italy. The cost of the rights was not made public. However, a Canal Plus spokeswoman stated that the price was not higher than the previously estimated amount.

News Corp. establishes Italian unit

News Corp. has set up an Italian unit that will pursue media in Iatly and on the continent. News Corp. said that the Milan based subsidiary was to set up a Italian pay TV platform as quickly as possible. News Corp. and France's TF1 are discussing a joint venture with Telecom Italia SpA to develop a digital TV platform. The venture would be 39% owned by the Italian News Corp. subsidiary.
