Carlos Menem, labour law, and the IMF

Article Abstract:

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is seeking changes in Argentine labor law, which tends to favor labor unions. The IMF provides financial aid for Argentina and also provides aid in overseeing the economy. The IMF argues that companies should have more freedom in shedding jobs and taking on workers, and that this would help to reduce unemployment. Some changes have been proposed, but the IMF argues that they do not go far enough. Changes that the IMF seeks include the rejection of a provision which makes existing labor contracts automatically renewable of new ones cannot be agreed on.
