Uncertainty clouds horizon for Cathay Pacific Airways

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific Airways' stock has fallen by about one-third during the year, its pilots are considering industrial action unless given a pay increase and improved scheduling, competition from EVA Airways and Dragonair is growing, and weakening Asian currencies have taken away business as a whole. Despite these signs of trouble, the airline expects the arrival of fourteen new airplanes this year. Most analysts are advising investors to sell Cathay stock.

Cathay Pacific says net profit rose 4.4% in 1994 amid rising costs, competition

Article Abstract:

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. (Cathay) reported net profits of $309.1 million for FY 1994 operations, a 4.4% increase over the level seen in 1993. The airline managed to garner a profit despite growing competition form other airlines and increasing salary costs. Airline officials were happy about Cathay's 1994 performance but they also expressed concern over the double-digit growth in personnel costs and the fourth consecutive year of decline in revenue per passenger per kilometer.
