Chamlong, the catalyst

Article Abstract:

His being honest, hard-working and effective make Chamlong Srimuang a charismatic leader to his supporters. They also believe that Chamlong respects the foundations of Thai society: state, religion and the monarchy. However, his critics depict Chamlong as an extremist and a demagogue who poses a threat to these very same foundations. Chamlong first ventured intopolitics by successfully campaigning for the governorship of Bangkok in 1985. His effective leadership gained him the favor of King Bhumipol. March of democracy

Article Abstract:

Thai Prime Minister Anand Panyarachun says that he removed two high-ranking Thai military officers from their positions only after carefully studying a report by the Ministry of Defense on the bloody pro-democracy demonstrations in Bangkok in May 1992 that killed 50 people. Panyarachun also says that he did not worry too much about a possible military backlash over the matter. Furthermore, he believes that there is no legal basis for the two officers to face trial. Panyarachun expressed the view that more participation by the people is needed for democracy to succeed in Thailand.
