The rise of the yen in the 1980s, which enabled newly affluent Japanese to absorb Western social and business ideas, was a major factor in the collapse of Japan's ancient-style isolationist government. The citizens now want young, outspoken leaders who are accountable to the electorate.

Reform won't change Japan after all

Article Abstract:

It is considered that reform of the Japanese political system, to take effect following the Jul 1997 election, will lessen the influence of money in politics there. It is thought there will be fewer pork barrel projects now to buy votes, though it is unsure how this may happen.

Japan logs on to reform

A new pressure group has formed in Japan that hopes to reform the traditional practice of Japanese politics. Reform of Heisei uses modern telecommunications networks and has adopted American lobbying techniques to monitor political corruption.
