Charter's passage gives many Thais hope; supporters of reformist constitution envision a fairer political system

Article Abstract:

The newly-approved constitution in Thailand has given hope for many citizens for an impartial government. Elections are expected to be held by May 1998. The new constitution aims to hand over more power in the government to the people. It also creates a human rights commission and a tribunal which may investigate infractions committed by government officials. A new electoral commission is also created which would supervise future elections dismissing previous unscrupulous practices such as vote buying.

Thailand's busy highways are teeming with danger

Article Abstract:

Thailand is seeing a sharp increase in the number of fatalities from traffic accidents. Between 1989 and 1994, the number of deaths grew threefold and the annual toll is now approaching the 20,000 mark. Government officials blame widespread apathy towards traffic rules and regulations as the root cause of the problem. Accidents are also caused by maniacal bus and truck drivers and drunken motorists.
